Award Winning Sculptural Water Garden
In 2016, we had the opportunity to transform a home with a newly renovated hyper-modern façade but a fading and dated front landscape. The challenge was exciting for our design team, as the area was extremely narrow yet very wide and high.
Our concept was to complement and enhance the stainless steel cupola with a set of custom galvanized landscape features that spanned the breadth of the house. The stone and steel modern “Tori Gate Waterfall,” with its stunning 5-foot high curtain waterfall, became the showpiece for the front of the house.
The landscape transformation included:
- A mortared bluestone porch
- A walkway and bench composed of bluestone slabs
- Custom galvanized planters
- Another Tori-style galvanized arbor for climbing annuals
The plantings were chosen to complement but not overwhelm the sculptural components of the landscape. The most striking elements are the four ‘Slender Silhouette’ Sweetgums, whose tall, columnar nature fit the narrow space and prevented the front façade from appearing overwhelming in scale. Low plantings of creeping sedums and other rock garden plants softened the crisp lines of the bluestone path and allowed the sculptural elements to shine.
The garden maintains four-season interest with summer blooming perennials and annuals, the beautiful red fall foliage of the sweetgums, a spot of green in the winter by specimen conifers, and in the spring, Schubertii allium bulbs provide a whimsical, yet architectural touch.
