Lotus Gardenscapes Earns 2021 MNLA Industry Award

Enchanting Woodland Patio takes top residential landscaping award
Dexter, Mich. – Lotus Gardenscapes’ work in replacing an aging composite deck with an enchanted woodland patio has earned the company top honors in the annual Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association’s (MLNA) Industry Awards Program.
Creating the award-winning design required Lotus Gardenscapes Owner and Designer Travis Pelletier to honor the property’s existing woodland landscape and the architecture of its natural, unusual stone home.
“The homeowner wanted a design that replaced their existing, worn deck with a natural stone patio that could serve as a private social area,” he says. “They considered it a ‘dream space,’ and it had to blend seamlessly with what was already there.”
The project included a number of challenges, including a second-floor screen porch and staircase leading to the patio. The homeowner didn’t want the space to feel like an add-on, but rather as if it was part of the original design.
“My challenge was to maintain a sense of the outdoors, yet still make the space feel intimate and cozy, particularly for evening social activities with friends and family,” says Pelletier.
The final design focused on a custom stonework design that complemented the house, along with a central fire feature. A knee-high cobblestone wall surrounds the perimeter of the new patio, creating a cozy atmosphere to enjoy the surrounding woodland landscape. The project also included an upgraded and relocated staircase, which is now concealed by custom wood panels, which also opened up the existing patio footprint. Custom lighting accents completed the project.
The project earned Lotus Gardenscapes the Residential Landscape Design & Installation $30,000 – $60,000 category award, one of four categories presented this year. The winning firms were recognized during the 2022 Great Lakes Trade Expo Virtual Education Conference, January 24–26, 2022.
