The backyard had a small outdated deck with a hot-tub surrounded by overgrown cedars. The family no longer fit or enjoyed the back space and also with recent climate changes found that the space was too hot and needed shade. Our design based on discussions about flexible space and the lack of features in the back started with a deck renovation and expanded to include a combined deck & patio with a simple integrated shade sail.
The existing space needed to be fully renovated so we could start with a blank slate. The location of the hot tub and the general modest slope of the grade were the key challenges for the job. Seasonally dealing with wet season also required some extra preparation. Moving the hot tub off the deck to expand the deck space and nesting it between the two was a perfect solution and putting in the base for the patio ahead of schedule so the carpentry team had a dry work area to build off was helpful.
