We are proud of the talented people that work at Lotus Gardenscapes, and appreciate our clients who allow our team to express our creativity and demonstrate our craftsmanship.  However, it’s always nice when those efforts are rewarded! Here are two projects recognized in 2017 with three prestigious industry awards for unique design projects.

Rustic Urban Retreat

The first project, “Rustic Urban Retreat,” placed in the 2017 Detroit Home Design Awards. It was also a winner in the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association’s (MNLA) 2017 Industry Awards Program in the category of Residential Landscape Design & Installation. Every year, MNLA recognizes and honors those in the green industry that have demonstrated excellence, professionalism, and responsible environmental standards.

“Rustic Urban Retreat” was created by Lotus Gardenscapes designer Nicole Lloyd, who was asked to design a backyard retreat complete with an outdoor brick oven, an outdoor kitchen, as well as a fireplace and waterfall. The project incorporates natural elements such as Michigan split fieldstone and Pennsylvania bluestone, with the effect of placing the space organically in the landscape. “I was inspired to create a space that would make the owners feel comfort in their outdoor environment,” says Lloyd. “I am honored and excited to be chosen as a winner for both of these industry awards.”

Donn Sculptural Entry Garden

The second award, for owner Traven’s innovative metal water sculpture and  garden, was awarded by MNLA in the Special Projects category. The residence of Paula Donn of Ann Arbor provided an exciting challenge for Lotus’s environmental artist. Donn’s house had a newly renovated hyper- modern façade but a fading and dated front landscape. Traven’s concept was to complement and enhance the stainless steel cupola with a set of custom galvanized landscape features that crossed the breadth of the house.

The most important piece is a stone and steel modern “Tori Gate Waterfall” playing off the flourish and curves in the architecture. This piece was our main design challenge, resulting in a stunning 5’ high curtain waterfall as the showpiece for the front of the house. The waterfall brings a powerful dynamic of falling water and sound to the entrance. The landscape was further transformed with a mortared bluestone porch, a walkway and bench composed of bluestone slabs, a set of custom galvanized planters, and another Tori-style galvanized arbor for climbing annuals. A custom lighting scheme ensures the landscape is as striking at night as during the day.
